Hiroshima Day in Vienna
retired colonel, the Chairman, The Association SOLDIERS AGAINST WAR
The image of the contemporary world is not satisfactory. There is more and more loud cry for war. Today and, as well as, every day we hear and read where there are fighting and bombing again. More frequently and more impressive we learn about new, more destructive weapon systems. Among them there are especially ballistic intercontinental missiles, having not classic explosives, but the nuclear charge. We have probably not learned from the past war adventures with tens of millions of victims.
The 6th and 9th August 1945 – two days of the victorious year over fascism, three months after the end of World War II and war operations in Europe, the world is overwhelmed by a shocking news. The United States used a new, more destructive weapon. Just two bombs in two cities of the Japanese Empire, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The result = there in Hiroshima more than 200,000 victims, and there in Nagasaki more than 120,000 victims, both cities totally destroyed. That was the year 1945. After 63 years there are the global nuclear powers, the USA and the RF and at least five other states with limited, but equally dangerous nuclear potential. There are several thousand nuclear charges and several thousand ballistic missiles. Nobody can imagine how many hundreds of victims there would be if this weapons would be used. More than 320,000 victims in Hiroshima and Nagasaki did not want war - but peace, as well as, hundreds of millions of people around the world want peace now.
The horror of the consequences of these two bombs disappeared in the euphoria of the victory over fascism. But with passing time and the threat of a new war it seems a little different. Was it absolutely necessary to use this devastating force at the civilian targets and the population of the practically defeated state? More frequently and more emphatic reminding of the threat of a new war using not only nuclear weapons , but also new, more destructive weapon systems, sounds regrettable especially from the western part of the world. We are convinced that joint efforts must be made to prevent the rise of armed conflicts with the danger of the use of nuclear weapons. To prevent madmen from destroying mankind.
Congatulations on your success – Austria´s accession to the Nuclear Weapons Treaty and the deposit of the ratification documents with the UN Secretary-General. We believe you will continue to support the efforts of other states to achieve the same success. Especially countries bound by coalition agreements. Our activity is identical to yours – i.e. achieving a complete ban on the use of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction and the prevention of armed conflicts.
